Which to use?

As I look across the torn and scattered wasteland that is sometimes known as social media I am reminded that much has changed since I joined high school club back in 2001. That was the first personal use social media sites I ever used, it was for people in different high schools to communicate. It blew our minds, though all me and my friends really wanted to do was use it to meet girls. Then in 2005 I joined Myspace after I got out of boot camp to stay in contact with my family and friends.

As far as current social media platforms go, the one of the ones that seem to be for personal use is Twitter which I am not a member of. Twitter's character limit compels me to believe that it is specifically for personal use only, though I assume someone can use this for a personal business. I also believe that Instagram is for personal use as well because of its focus on pictures, though I do believe that there are some professions that could use this to their advantage such as artist, to create good word of mouth.

I believe that Facebook can be used as a sort of hybrid social media platform. By that I mean that you can use pictures, give descriptions, create events and coordinate with your customers. Facebook is full of individuals who if interested can provide input on your product and services, creating a better relationship with your customers. Others such as YouTube and WordPress can be used to communicate directly with your customers and to display your wares to prospective customers. I actually believe that the social media platform that one uses should depend on the kind of business they do.

  1. Oh my! MySpace! Haha I do remember having an account with them and thought it was amazing as well! Crazy how time just flew right by us and today there's so much more out in the internet world to explore and take part of! WordPress keeps coming up and sounds very familiar...What is it?

  2. Hi Terence,
First of all, I really like your blog background. I missed it somehow last week, so I'm really glad I got to see it today.

I think I am one of the few in the class who did not grow up with any social media. In High School, all we had were our high school yearbooks. We used to "post" things in each others yearbooks. lol.

I agree, it make sense that the social media platform you choose should depend on what type of business you are in.

  3. Great post! It was interesting to hear about your experience using Social Media since the beginning.
I agree that Instagram is good for personal use (more than business) but probably during this course we will learn effective ways to use Instagram for business promotions as well.
I don't have any experience with Twitter or Word Press. So far I know that Facebook is a huge and great platform for personal and business use.
I also believe that Social Media platforms used should depend on the kind of business you do but I still don't know how to tell which Social Media is best for each different kind of business out there. I hope we learn that as well.

  4. I completely agree that the different types of businesses will be more successful with different types of social media. It totally makes sense that a business with a strong visual component can use Instagram very successfully.

  5. Terence,

I feel the same way! I remember when MySpace was a way to post random things to keep in touch with people from high school and find friends from middle school or otherwise. Now, so much has evolved and it's grown so much larger than I thought possible.

I believe that many different companies can use any of these platforms to boost awareness of their companies, but it depends on how they do it and what their target audience is.

Great post, and I like the way you write your blogs.
